Our study of aikido incorporates the study of iaido. The iaido we study illuminates the deep relationship between the katana and techniques in aikido.

Our iaido study also integrates the ken (wooden sword) and jo (wooden staff) to show the expressions of Aikido techniques as they flow from empty hand techniques to the final expressions with the katana.

WHY DO WE INCLUDE THE STUDY OF IAIDO ALONG WITH OUR STUDY OF AIKIDO AND COMBATIVES?

Studying iaido helps practitioners by teaching them the principles
of controlling their body movement and energy. The mental and physical discipline practiced in iaido helps practitioners remain calm and focused; with this focus on precision in each movement, a person's awareness is heightened to higher levels.

This enhanced level of awareness enables us to hone our skills. Additionally, the practice of iaido assists with developing balance and agility, allowing practitioners to better anticipate and react to attacking opponents.

Nishikaze

Our iaido program joins with the Nishikaze Aikido Society of America. Nishikaze is the official ranking body in the U.S. for Aiki
Toho lai.

Otonashi or Silent

Nishio's sword work is otonashi or silent, meaning the contact between blades minimal and movements are done in the
gaps of the opponents attack.

Aikido & the Sword

"O Sensei said that 'Aikido is the expression of the principles of the sword through the body.

Ken & Jo

Understand the relationship
between the ken and jo in aikido
techniques.
